One of the most magical ways to experience Utrecht is to explore the canals. You can take a relaxing guided canal cruise or rent a pedal boat, kayak or if you want your experience to become truly Dutch: rent a water bike boat. Seeing the city from the water is my favorite activity and is truly unforgettable.

6. Eat a sandwich Mario! (Broodje Mario)
No visit to Utrecht is complete without trying the city’s legendary sandwich Mario. This classic Italian sandwich filled with vegetables, cheese, and salami has been a local favorite since the 1970s. Sold from the famous broodje Mario stand on the Old Canal, it’s the perfect grab-and-go meal while exploring the city. Don’t forget to try some other Dutch classics while you are in the Netherlands, like a stroopwafel or poffertjes.

After climbing the Dom Tower don’t forget to visit the beautiful Dom Gardens and the st. Martin Cathedral for free! Tucked away behind the Dom church, the Dom gardens also called the Pandhof Domkerk offer a peaceful escape in the heart of Utrecht. This cloister garden is beautifully landscaped with colorful flowers, greenery, and historic stone arches. Personally, I find it kinda Harry Potter-looking! The gardens are a hidden gem where you can relax in the middle of the busy city.

Utrecht is the birthplace of Nijntje, known as Miffy in English, the beloved cartoon character created by Dutch artist Dick Bruna.
