1. Try to Spot Benny the Seal at the Sydney Opera House
Looking for one of the more unusual free things to do in Sydney? Keep an eye out for Benny the Seal around the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay.
Benny became a local celebrity after regularly appearing around Sydney Harbour. If you’re lucky, you might spot him relaxing near the Opera House. Even if Benny isn’t around, Circular Quay is worth visiting for its incredible views.
Take a walk around the harbour, admire the Sydney Opera House up close, and enjoy views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s an iconic Sydney experience, and it won’t cost you a thing.
2. Wander Through the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
The Royal Botanic Garden is one of the best free places to visit in Sydney. Located right beside Sydney Harbour, the gardens are filled with lush greenery, walking paths, colourful plants, and beautiful waterfront views.
You can easily spend a few hours exploring the gardens without spending any money. Along the way, you’ll also find some of the city’s best views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
One of the highlights is Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, a sandstone bench carved by convicts in 1810 for Elizabeth Macquarie, the wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. She reportedly enjoyed sitting here and watching ships arrive in Sydney Harbour.
Today, Mrs Macquarie’s Chair is one of the most popular free viewpoints in Sydney. Visit around sunrise or sunset for an especially beautiful view.

3. Walk from Bondi to Coogee
The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is one of the most beautiful free activities in Sydney and one of my favourite ways to experience the city’s coastline.
The famous coastal trail takes you along dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, rock pools, parks, and ocean viewpoints. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, so you don’t have to rush.
You can also take a break for a swim, relax on one of the beaches, or stop for photos.
If you love coastal scenery and walking, this is definitely one to add to your Sydney itinerary.
4. Explore Sydney’s Free Museums
You don’t have to spend a lot on museums to experience Sydney’s art and culture. Several museums and cultural attractions offer free general admission, making them a great option when you’re travelling on a budget.
Some places to look out for include:
Art Gallery of New South Wales – Explore Australian and international art while enjoying the gallery’s beautiful location near Sydney Harbour.
Australian Museum – Discover natural history, wildlife, and Australian Indigenous cultures.
Museum of Contemporary Art Australia – See contemporary art in a spectacular location overlooking Circular Quay.
Always check the museum’s current admission information before visiting, as special exhibitions or events may require a ticket.

5. Enjoy the Views from Observatory Hill
For some of the best free views in Sydney, head to Observatory Hill.
Located close to The Rocks, this peaceful park overlooks Sydney Harbour and offers beautiful views of the Harbour Bridge and surrounding cityscape.
It’s a particularly lovely spot around sunset, when the sky changes colour and the city begins to light up.
Compared with some of Sydney’s more famous viewpoints, Observatory Hill can also feel like a quieter place to sit, relax, and enjoy the view.

6. Walk Across the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge is another fantastic way to enjoy Sydney for free.
The pedestrian walkway gives you views across Sydney Harbour, with the Opera House, Circular Quay, and city skyline all around you. You can simply turn up and walk across without booking a ticket.
For the best experience, consider going early in the morning when the city is quieter. Sunset is another beautiful time to walk across the bridge and watch the skyline change.
Just remember that the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb is a paid experience. Walking across the pedestrian path is completely free.

7. Take a Day Trip to Blue Mountains National Park
Looking for free things to do near Sydney? Escape the city and spend a day exploring the stunning Blue Mountains National Park.
The Blue Mountains are known for their dramatic cliffs, eucalyptus forests, waterfalls, hiking trails, and incredible viewpoints. One of the most famous sights is the Three Sisters at Echo Point, where you can enjoy spectacular views across the mountains and valleys.
The best part for budget travellers? There is no general entry fee for the national park, so once you get there, you can explore many of its trails and viewpoints for free.
Getting to the Blue Mountains is also possible without a car. You can take public transport from Sydney, making it a great budget-friendly day trip. If you want to know exactly how to get there, check out my other blog: on [how to get to the Blue Mountains from Sydney by public transport].
