3 Day Rome Itinerary: The Perfect Rome Trip

When in Rome… you’re visiting one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in the world, so you’ll want to make the most of every minute. This 3 day Rome itinerary takes you from ancient ruins and world-famous landmarks to charming Italian streets, delicious pasta, and plenty of gelato. It’s the perfect way to experience Rome in three days — and yes, you can even live out your own Lizzie McGuire moment.
Day 1: Ancient Rome, the Colosseum & Roman Forum
Start your 3 day Rome itinerary by stepping straight into history. Begin your first morning at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, two of Rome’s most famous ancient sites.
Visit the Colosseum
Getting inside the Colosseum is an absolute must. Standing where gladiators once fought thousands of years ago is an unforgettable experience. Plus, seeing the enormous structure from the inside makes Roman history feel much more real.
I recommend going early in the day if you can. That way, you can explore before the biggest crowds arrive.
After visiting the Colosseum, take a break and enjoy lunch at one of the nearby restaurants. You’ll need the energy for the next stop!
Walk Through the Roman Forum
In the afternoon, head to the Roman Forum. The ruins here are surprisingly beautiful and incredibly interesting. This was once the heart of ancient Rome, filled with temples, government buildings, markets, and meeting places.
As you walk between the ancient ruins, it genuinely feels like you’re stepping back in time. The sheer size and detail of the remaining structures are impressive.
Take your time here rather than rushing through. There is plenty to see, and the atmosphere is one of the best parts of visiting the Roman Forum.
Day 2: Vatican City & a Fun Pasta-Making Class
Your second day is all about art, history, food, and one of my favorite experiences from the trip.
Climb St. Peter’s Basilica
Start your morning in Vatican City with a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica. If you’re up for it, climb to the top of the dome. The climb can be tiring, but the panoramic views over Rome are absolutely worth it.
Once you make your way back down, take some time to explore the basilica itself. The interior is breathtaking, with incredible artwork, marble details, and centuries of history.
Make Your Own Italian Pasta
Next, it’s time for lunch — but not just any lunch.
Join a pasta-making class and learn how to make your own Italian pasta. This was honestly one of the funniest and best experiences of the entire trip.
Our pasta-making class was close to the Vatican, which made it easy to combine with the rest of the day. We had unlimited wine, great music, amazing hosts, and, of course, delicious homemade pasta.

Explore the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel
After your pasta lunch, head to the Vatican Museums. Spend the afternoon wandering through the incredible galleries and admiring the huge collection of art.
Of course, don’t miss the Sistine Chapel. Seeing Michelangelo’s famous ceiling in person is one of those moments that makes visiting Rome so special.
Day 3: Rome’s Iconic Highlights & Charming Streets
For the final day of your 3 day Rome itinerary, slow things down a little. After two busy sightseeing days, this is the perfect time to simply wander through Rome and enjoy the city.
Throw a Coin at the Trevi Fountain
Start your morning by walking through Rome’s small, dreamy Italian streets on your way to the Trevi Fountain.
The fountain is one of Rome’s most famous landmarks, and it’s even more impressive in person. Once you arrive, take a moment to sit nearby and enjoy the atmosphere.
And, of course, don’t forget to throw a coin into the fountain over your shoulder. According to the legend, doing so means you’ll return to Rome one day.
I’m definitely not taking any chances!
Get Gelato at Venchi
After visiting the Trevi Fountain, treat yourself to something sweet. Venchi is located just around the corner, making it an easy stop for an ice cream or milkshake.
Because when in Rome, gelato is basically part of the itinerary.
Visit the Pantheon
From the Trevi Fountain, continue towards the Pantheon. This ancient Roman temple is one of the best-preserved buildings from ancient Rome and is still incredibly impressive today.
Take some time to look around inside before continuing your walk through the historic center.
Stop at the Spanish Steps
Next, make your way towards the Spanish Steps. This is another one of Rome’s most iconic spots and a great place for a classic travel photo.
Along the way, keep an eye out for the many cute boutiques, souvenir shops, cafés, and little streets. In fact, some of the best discoveries in Rome happen when you’re not following a strict plan. So, leave some room in your 3 day Rome itinerary for getting a little lost. You never know what you might find!
Final Thoughts: Is 3 Days in Rome Enough?
Three days in Rome may not be enough to see absolutely everything, but it is enough to experience many of the city’s highlights.
This 3 day Rome itinerary combines ancient history, famous landmarks, incredible art, Italian food, and plenty of time to simply enjoy the atmosphere. From standing inside the Colosseum to throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, every day brings something different.
