Utrecht is the cozy, charming, and often underrated little sister of Amsterdam. And yes, I may be biased because I live here! But that’s exactly why I love showing visitors around this beautiful Dutch city. If you’re spending one day in Utrecht, this local’s guide will help you experience the city’s historic streets, iconic canals, cozy cafés, and best local spots.
Start Your Day in the Historic City Center
Start your one day in Utrecht with a relaxed walk through the historic city center. Make your way towards the iconic Dom Tower while wandering through cobblestone streets and discovering charming cafés along the way.
Grab a coffee and take your time. Utrecht has a much more relaxed atmosphere than Amsterdam, making it the perfect city to explore on foot.
As you walk through the center, keep an eye out for the beautiful old buildings, small boutiques, and hidden courtyards. You never know what you’ll find around the next corner.
Climb the Iconic Dom Tower
A visit to Utrecht isn’t complete without seeing the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Feeling adventurous? Climb the 465 steps to the top for incredible panoramic views across Utrecht. The climb is part of the experience, and the views at the top are definitely worth the effort.
Along the way, you’ll learn about the tower’s fascinating history, including the devastating storm of 1674 that caused the nave of St. Martin’s Cathedral to collapse. The Dom Tower was left standing separately from the cathedral, creating the unique Dom Square you see today.
Right next to the tower, you’ll find the Dom Gardens (Pandhof Domkerk). These peaceful medieval cloister gardens are free to visit and feel like a secret garden hidden in the middle of the city.
Have Lunch at Ted’s
After exploring the city center, it’s time for lunch.
Head to Ted’s, one of Utrecht’s popular spots for a relaxed lunch. My personal favorite is the chicken sandwich, but their high tea is another great option if you’re looking for something a little more special

The best part? You can sit on the terrace along the Oudegracht (Old Canal). Grab a seat by the water, watch the boats pass by, and enjoy one of the things that makes Utrecht so special: its unique canal atmosphere.
Explore Utrecht From the Water
After lunch, see Utrecht from a completely different perspective: the water.
The Oudegracht is one of the city’s most recognizable features, with historic wharf cellars and terraces sitting directly beside the canal.
There are several ways to explore the canals. You can join a guided boat tour, rent a kayak, or try something a little more unusual by renting a water bike (bootfiets).
A water bike is one of my favorite things to do with friends on a warm summer day. It’s fun, active, and gives you beautiful views of Utrecht from the water.
Go Shopping in Utrecht
Still have some energy left? Spend part of your afternoon shopping.
Utrecht has a great mix of large shopping chains, independent boutiques, vintage stores, and charming gift shops. You can easily spend a few hours wandering between the bigger shopping streets and smaller streets around the canals.
Here are a few places to check out:
Hoog Catharijne: A modern shopping mall conveniently connected to Utrecht Central Station.
Oudegracht: Wander along the canal and explore the smaller independent shops.
Vredenburg Market: A lively market with different stalls throughout the week.
Bloemenmarkt at Janskerkhof: Visit the flower market on Saturday for a colorful Dutch shopping experience.

End Your Day on Drieharingstraat
After a busy day of sightseeing, finish your one day in Utrecht with dinner at Drieharingstraat.
This charming little street is tucked away in the historic center and is lined with cozy restaurants and terraces. It’s the perfect place to slow down, enjoy a good meal, and do some people-watching.
Utrecht is especially beautiful in the evening, when the historic streets and canals start to come alive with locals enjoying dinner and drinks.
