10 Things to Do in Utrecht: Best Things to See & Do

Looking for the best 10 things to do in Utrecht? You’re in the right place. Utrecht is one of the Netherlands’ most charming cities, with historic canals, beautiful architecture, cozy cafés, and plenty of things to see and do. I may be a little biased because I live here, but I think Utrecht is one of the best Dutch cities to explore in a day. Whether you’re visiting Utrecht on a day trip from Amsterdam or spending a few days in the Netherlands, these are 10 things to do in Utrecht that will help you experience the city at its best.

1. Climb the Dom tower

The Dom Tower is Utrecht’s most iconic landmark. Standing at 112 meters (367 feet) tall, it is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands.
Climbing the 465 steps to the top is definitely a workout, but the breathtaking views over Utrecht and the surrounding countryside make it worth the effort. Along the way, you’ll also learn about the fascinating history of the tower.
Did you know that a devastating storm damaged the church in 1674? The nave of the Dom Church collapsed, leaving the Dom Tower separated from the rest of the church. The space between them is now known as Dom Square (Domplein).

2. Get a drink at Neude Square

Looking for one of the best places to experience Utrecht’s atmosphere? Head to Neude Square.
Neude is one of Utrecht’s most popular meeting spots and is surrounded by cafés, bars, restaurants, and the beautiful new library. Grab a drink, find a spot on one of the outdoor terraces, and enjoy some good old-fashioned people-watching.
The square also hosts cultural events and festivals throughout the year. During the summer, the terraces come alive, making Neude a great place to relax and soak up the local atmosphere. If you want to experience Utrecht like a local, grabbing a drink at Neude is one of the things to do in Utrecht that shouldn’t be missed.

3. Shop ’till you drop at Hoog Catharijne mall

If shopping is on your agenda, Hoog Catharijne is Utrecht’s go-to shopping destination.
Located directly next to Utrecht Central Station, this huge shopping center is home to fashion brands, electronics stores, beauty shops, restaurants, and more. You’ll find a mix of international brands and Dutch stores, making it easy to spend a few hours browsing the shops. Its location also makes Hoog Catharijne incredibly convenient. Whether you’re arriving by train or simply want to take a break from sightseeing, the mall is right in the heart of Utrecht and one of the best 10 things to do in Utrecht.

4. Explore Utrecht’s Lively Markets

One of the best things to see in Utrecht is the city’s lively market scene.
On Saturdays, head to Janskerkhof for the flower market. You’ll find colorful flowers and plants filling the square, creating a quintessentially Dutch experience.
For a larger market, visit Vredenburg Square, where different markets take place throughout the week. Depending on the day, you can browse stalls selling fresh produce, clothes, Dutch cheese, stroopwafels, flowers, and plenty of other goodies.
Whether you’re looking for something to eat or simply want to experience everyday life in Utrecht, the markets are well worth a visit.

5. See Utrecht From the Water

One of the most magical things to do in Utrecht is exploring the city from the water.
Utrecht’s canals offer a completely different perspective of the city. You can take a relaxing guided canal cruise, rent a pedal boat or kayak, or, if you want a truly Dutch experience, try a water bike boat.
Seeing Utrecht from the water is personally my favorite activity. You’ll pass historic buildings, beautiful bridges, and the famous canal-side wharves while enjoying the city at a slower pace. It’s especially fun on a warm summer day with friends.

6. Eat a sandwich Mario! (Broodje Mario)

No list of 10 things to do in Utrecht would be complete without trying one of the city’s most famous foods: Broodje Mario.
This legendary Italian-style sandwich has been a Utrecht favorite since the 1970s. It’s filled with vegetables, cheese, and salami and makes the perfect quick lunch while exploring the city.
You can find the famous Broodje Mario stand along the Old Canal, making it easy to combine with a stroll through Utrecht’s historic center.
And while you’re in the Netherlands, don’t forget to try some other Dutch classics too. Grab a stroopwafel or some poffertjes for a sweet treat!

7. Relax in the beautiful Dom gardens

After visiting the Dom Tower, make sure you stop by the beautiful Dom Gardens, also known as the Pandhof Domkerk. Tucked away behind the Dom Church, these peaceful cloister gardens offer a quiet escape right in the center of Utrecht. The garden is beautifully landscaped with colorful flowers, greenery, and historic stone arches.
Personally, I think it looks a little bit like something from Harry Potter!
The Dom Gardens are also free to visit, making them one of the best free things to do in Utrecht. Take a moment to wander around, sit on a bench, and enjoy a little peace and quiet away from the busy streets.

8. Visit the Miffy museum

Did you know that Miffy (Nijntje) was born in Utrecht?
Nijntje, known as Miffy in English, is the beloved cartoon character created by Dutch artist Dick Bruna, who was born and lived in Utrecht.
To learn more about this iconic character, visit the Nijntje Museum (Miffy Museum). The interactive museum is designed primarily for children, with colorful exhibits that bring Miffy’s world to life. Even if you’re traveling without children, there’s still a fun reason to stop by: the museum has a cute Miffy-themed restaurant that is worth checking out.
Visiting the Miffy Museum is a fun way to discover a unique part of Utrecht’s Dutch culture and creativity.

9. Stroll around the Old canal (De oude gracht)

While Amsterdam may be famous for its canals, Utrecht’s canals have their own unique charm. The Oudegracht (Old Canal) runs through the heart of the city and is famous for its distinctive two-level layout. Along the lower level, you’ll find historic wharves, terraces, restaurants, and old canal cellars sitting right beside the water.
Take a leisurely stroll along the canal, stop for a drink or meal, and enjoy the historic architecture surrounding you.
And, of course, don’t forget your camera! The Oudegracht is one of the most photogenic places in Utrecht and one of my favorite spots to take pictures.

10. Visit castle the Haar (Kasteel de Haar)

Just outside Utrecht, you’ll find Kasteel de Haar, the largest castle in the Netherlands and one of the country’s most fairytale-like castles.
With its impressive towers, gardens, bridges, and surrounding park, Kasteel de Haar feels like something straight out of a storybook. It’s a beautiful place to explore, take pictures, or simply enjoy a peaceful walk.
The inside of the castle is just as impressive, with richly decorated rooms, historic furniture, and beautiful architectural details. Kasteel de Haar is around a 20–30 minute trip from Utrecht, making it an easy addition to your visit if you have some extra time. If you love castles, beautiful gardens, and fairytale scenery, this is definitely one of the best things to do near Utrecht.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to Do in Utrecht

Utrecht may be smaller than Amsterdam, but it is packed with history, culture, beautiful architecture, and Dutch charm. From climbing the Dom Tower and relaxing in the Dom Gardens to exploring the canals, eating a Broodje Mario, and browsing the city’s lively markets, there are plenty of things to do in Utrecht.
And because Utrecht is my hometown, I might be biased, but I think the city deserves a spot on every Netherlands itinerary.
So if you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands, don’t just stick to Amsterdam. Come discover Utrecht, explore its historic streets and canals, and experience the welcoming atmosphere of one of the Netherlands’ most beautiful cities.
