How to Spend a Day in Utrecht, the Netherlands (Local’s Guide)

Utrecht, The Netherlands | Europe

Utrecht is the cozy, charming, and often underrated little sister of Amsterdam. And yes, I may be biased because I live here! That’s exactly why I love showing visitors around this beautiful Dutch city. If you have just one day in Utrecht, here’s the perfect itinerary to experience its culture, canals, food, and local atmosphere.

Start Your Day in the Historic City Center

Begin your day with a stroll through Utrecht’s old town and walk towards the Dom Tower. Wander along the cobblestone streets, grab a coffee at one of the many cozy cafés, and enjoy the relaxed morning vibe that makes this city so special.

Climb the Iconic Dom Tower

A visit to Utrecht isn’t complete without seeing the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. If you’re up for it, climb the 465 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

Along the way, you’ll learn more about the tower’s history, including the tornado in 1674 that separated the tower from the cathedral, creating today’s Dom Square.

Right next to the tower you’ll find the Dom Gardens (Pandhof Domkerk). These magical cloister gardens are free to visit and feel straight out of a Harry Potter movie.

Enjoy Lunch at Ted’s

Head to Ted’s, one of Utrecht’s most popular lunch spots. Their chicken sandwich is my personal favorite, and the terrace along the Old Canal makes it the perfect place to relax halfway through your day. Sit by the water, watch the boats go by, and enjoy the city’s unique canal atmosphere. The high tea is also a great choice!

See Utrecht From the Water

After lunch, explore Utrecht from a different perspective: the canals. You can join a guided canal boat tour, rent a kayak, or go for a true Dutch experience by renting a water bike (waterfiets). This is one of my favorite activities to do with friends on a warm summer day. It’s fun, active, and gives you beautiful views of the city.

Go Shopping in Utrecht

If you still have energy left, go shopping! Utrecht has a great mix of big brands, local boutiques, and unique gift stores. Explore:

Hoog Catharijne Mall – a modern shopping center connected to Central Station
– Small streets around the Old Canal – full of charming local shops
– VredenBurg market – Every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
– Bloemenmarkt (Flower market) – Every Saturday at JansKerkhof.

End Your Day With Dinner on a Cozy Dutch Street

Finish your day with dinner on one of Utrecht’s charming restaurant-filled streets the drieharingstraat. These narrow Dutch lanes are full of cozy restaurants and terraces, the perfect for people-watching and ending your day on a relaxed note.

Final Thoughts

Utrecht is welcoming, walkable, and full of history, canals, boutiques, and great restaurants. Whether you’re climbing the Dom Tower, biking on the water, or shopping along the Old Canal, this one-day itinerary will help you experience the very best of the city, just like a local.
