Ohrid is one of the most beautiful destinations in the Balkans—a mix of crystal-clear lake water, ancient history, charming streets, and a peaceful holiday vibe. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a full summer escape, these are the best things to do in Ohrid, North Macedonia.

1. Take a Scenic Coast Walk Along Lake Ohrid

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience Ohrid is simply by walking along its coastline. The route takes you past hidden coves, small pebble beaches, and amazing viewpoints over the sparkling lake.
Start your walk near the old town and follow the wooden boardwalk—known for its many love locks and often called “The Bridge of Wishes.” Keep the lake on your left as you stroll. Eventually the path leads you up toward the cliffs, where you’ll pass little cafés and quiet swimming spots.
When the boardwalk ends, head up the small street on your right and continue walking toward Ohrid’s most iconic landmark: the Church of St. John the Theologian.

Perched dramatically on a cliff above the lake, the Church of Saint John is one of the most photographed spots in North Macedonia—and for good reason. The serene setting, blue water, and stunning medieval architecture make it a must-see.

3. Enjoy a Peaceful Boat Ride with Stunning Views of Ohrid

One of the most magical experiences in Ohrid is simply taking a short boat ride across the calm, blue waters of the lake. Even if you don’t want to spend an entire day on a boat, the smaller 20–40 minute trips are absolutely worth it.
As you glide over the water, the city seems even more beautiful: the red rooftops of the old town rising above the cliffs, the Church of Saint John perched dramatically over the lake, and the mountains reflecting on the surface. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and almost dreamlike—perfect for taking photos or just sitting back and soaking in the scenery.

4. Spot Turtles at the Ancient Ruins of St. Sophia

The Church of St. Sophia, built in the 9th century, is one of the oldest and most historically important buildings in Ohrid. Around the ruins and gardens, you might spot small turtles sunbathing—an unexpected but charming surprise!
Just steps from the church is a fantastic Italian restaurant overlooking the ancient walls. I highly recommend their Pasta with Vodka Sauce—it quickly became my favorite meal in Ohrid.

5. Take a Day Trip to the Bay of Bones & St. Naum

No visit to Ohrid is complete without a day trip on the lake. And the best combination is Bay of Bones + St. Naum.

This open-air museum is a reconstruction of an ancient pile-dwelling settlement built over the water. The wooden walkways, clear turquoise lake, and mountain backdrop make it a stunning place to wander and take photos.

St. Naum
The boat then continues to St. Naum Monastery, close to the Albanian border. The monastery grounds are beautiful, full of peacocks, history, and panoramic lake views.
While you’re here, don’t miss the small boat ride on the Black Drim Springs—the water is unbelievably clear and calm, almost dreamlike. It’s one of the most peaceful experiences you can have in North Macedonia.
