Lake Louise in Winter: Funny Mistakes & Travel Tips
Banff, Canada | North-America
Banff is the cozy little town you expect to see in a romantic Christmas movie. As you walk down Banff Ave you would want a handsome man to bump into you.
Banff is surrounded by snowy mountains, frozen lakes, and endless wildlife. Whether you want to ski, ice skate, hike, or simply enjoy the winter atmosphere, Banff is one of the most magical winter destinations in the world.
My Canadian cousin Rachel and I decided to visit Banff together during winter, and naturally, seeing the famous Lake Louise was at the top of our list. We had both seen the iconic photos on Pinterest and we were determined to experience it ourselves.
What we didn’t expect was how many funny mistakes we would make along the way.
So, if you are planning on visiting Lake Louise in winter, here are a few things we learned the hard way.
1. Don’t get off at the wrong bus stop
The bus to Lake Louise only comes around every 40 minutes, which already makes timing important. Unfortunately for us, we accidentally got off at the wrong bus stop in the middle of nowhere.
When we checked Google Maps, it told us walking would take over an hour because we would basically be hiking up a snowy mountain. Rachel and I looked at each other and realized we had become the stereotype of two blonde girls travelling alone for the first time.
With no other options, we decided to ask two strangers for a ride, silently hoping they were not serial killers.
Luckily for us, they turned out to be two shy boys happy to have girls in their car.
Lesson learned: always double-check your bus stop before getting off.

2. Always Check the Weather Before Visiting Lake Louise
When we finally arrived at Lake Louise, the view still completely took my breath away. Normally, Lake Louise is famous for its bright turquoise blue water, but because we visited during a winter, the entire lake was frozen and covered in snow. We arrived in what looked like a real-life snow globe because a snowstorm had just started.
The weather was not ideal and everyone was leaving. However we decided to make the most of it and go ice skating on the frozen lake. And honestly, it became one of the best parts of the trip. Snowflakes covered our jackets while mountains disappeared into the fog around us. We skated all the way across the lake and found a dog wearing winter boots running happily over the ice.
Still, if you want those famous bright blue Lake Louise photos, definitely check the weather forecast before visiting.

3. Bring More Money Than You Think You Need
After our adventurous and slightly dangerous day, Rachel and I decided we deserved a reward.
Right beside Lake Louise sits the famous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel. It is known for its incredible lake views and luxury winter atmosphere. Staying there costs around 1000 Canadian dollars per night. Which was completely impossible for two broke students like us.
But we still wanted to experience it somehow.
So instead of booking a room, we went inside to drink cocktails.
We sat there in our winter clothes feeling both glamorous and financially irresponsible at the same time.
Two cocktails ended up costing us 53 Canadian dollars, which honestly felt painful at the time. But looking back, it was completely worth it for the experience.
Sometimes travel memories are worth spending a little extra money on.
Why Banff in Winter Is Worth Visiting
Even though everything did not go according to plan, Banff became one of my favourite winter destinations.
There is something magical about the combination of snowy mountains, frozen lakes, cozy cafés, and adventurous.
And while I did not get the romantic Christmas movie moment I imagined, I realized something even better by the end of the trip: sometimes the best travel memories come from adventurous friendships, spontaneous decisions, and laughing through every mistake together.
If you are planning a trip to Banff and Lake Louise in winter, hopefully our funny mistakes help you avoid making the same ones.
