Things to Do in Manly Beach Sydney: Why Manly Beats Bondi

Everyone visiting Sydney for the first time seems to head straight to Bondi. And honestly, I get it. Bondi is iconic, beautiful, and you can absolutely have an amazing day there. If that’s what you’re after, check out my guide to spending a perfect day at Bondi Beach.
But after spending six months in Sydney, I found myself much more drawn to Manly. If you’re looking for the best things to do in Manly Beach Sydney, I’d seriously consider heading in the opposite direction from Bondi.
Hop on the ferry from Circular Quay and head to Manly.
While Bondi is glamorous, busy, and packed with visitors, Manly feels a little more relaxed. Think surfers carrying boards down the street, skaters cruising around, salty hair, good coffee, and people who seem to have nowhere else they need to be. It’s less about seeing and being seen and more about enjoying the beach. And honestly? That’s exactly why I love it.
1. Take the Ferry from Circular Quay
Your Manly experience starts before you even arrive.
Head to Circular Quay and take the ferry to Manly. The journey itself is one of the best things to do in Manly Beach Sydney.
Skip the indoor seating and head outside. Find a spot on the front, side, or back deck and enjoy the views as you sail through Sydney Harbour.
You’ll pass some of Sydney’s most famous sights along the way, including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. It’s the kind of journey where you’ll probably take way too many photos, and I fully support that.
2. Start Your Day at Fika The Bakery
Sydney takes coffee seriously, so you’re never far from a good café.
One of my favourites in Manly is Fika The Bakery. It’s a great place to grab a coffee and something to eat before spending the day exploring.
The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff are friendly, and it’s just far enough away from the main crowds to feel like a local hangout.
Grab your coffee, take your time, and then head towards the beach.
3. Explore Manly and Freshwater Beach
Of course, one of the main reasons to visit Manly is the beach itself.
Manly Beach is where you’ll find the biggest crowds and plenty of surf action. There’s always something happening, whether that’s surfers catching waves, people playing beach volleyball, or visitors enjoying the sunshine.
But don’t stop there.
Walk north towards Freshwater Beach, or “Freshie” as the locals call it.
Freshwater is smaller and generally feels more relaxed than Manly Beach. It’s the kind of place where you can sit on the sand, watch the surfers, and forget that you’re only a ferry ride away from one of Australia’s biggest cities.
If you want to experience Manly beyond the main tourist strip, this is one of the places I’d definitely add to your itinerary.
4. Find the Wormhole
Want to find one of Manly’s more unusual spots?
Head towards the northern end of Manly Beach, near Queenscliff, and look for the Wormhole. This narrow tunnel through the rocks connects Manly and Queenscliff. It’s easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there, which is part of the fun.
Walk through the tunnel and you’ll come out onto a rocky area overlooking the ocean. It’s not your typical Sydney attraction, and that’s exactly what makes it worth finding.
The waves crashing against the rocks and the open Pacific stretching out in front of you make this one of my favourite things to do in Manly Beach Sydney.
Just be careful: the rocks can be slippery, especially after rain or when the ocean is rough. Wear proper shoes and don’t get too close to the edge.
6. Have Pizza by the Harbour
You don’t need an expensive restaurant to have an amazing dinner in Manly. For a more budget-friendly option, head to Whistler Pizza on a Monday and check out their Monday Madness deal.
Grab your pizza and take it with you to East Manly Cove Beach, on the harbour side of Manly.
While many visitors stay on the ocean side of the peninsula, you can sit by the harbour, eat your pizza, and watch the evening light over the water.
It’s simple, inexpensive, and one of those little travel moments that ends up being more memorable than an expensive dinner.
Have Dinner at The Pantry
If you’re looking for something a little more special, book a table at The Pantry.
The restaurant sits right on the edge of Manly Beach, giving you a front-row view of the Pacific Ocean.
Order a glass of white wine and settle in for dinner with the sound of the waves in the background.
And save room for dessert.
A classic Australian pavlova is the perfect way to finish the evening.
It’s definitely more of a splurge than pizza on the beach, but if you’re celebrating something or simply want a beautiful dinner with a view—it’s worth considering.
6. Grab a Drink at Donny’s
After a day at the beach, it’s time for a drink.
For something more relaxed than the polished bars along the waterfront, head to Donny’s.
It has an industrial, loft-style atmosphere with live music, burgers, and a good happy hour. It feels casual and unpretentious, which fits Manly perfectly.
This is the kind of place where you can grab a drink, hang out for a while, and let the day slowly turn into evening.
Hike to North Head
Still have some energy left?Then make your way towards North Head.
The walk involves a bit of climbing, but the views make the effort worthwhile. From up here, you can look back towards Sydney and out across the endless Pacific Ocean.
It’s a completely different perspective of the city.
You get beaches, cliffs, bushland, ocean views, and the Sydney skyline all in one place. If you’re spending a full day in Manly, this is a great way to finish your adventure.
Final Thoughts: Why Manly Beach Is Worth Visiting
So, is Manly better than Bondi? I’m going to say yes, but I’ll admit I’m biased. Bondi is famous for a reason. It’s beautiful, lively, and definitely worth visiting at least once. But Manly gives you a different side of Sydney. It feels more relaxed, a little more local, and less focused on the crowds. You can take a scenic ferry across Sydney Harbour, drink excellent coffee, explore two beaches, find a hidden rock tunnel, eat pizza by the water, grab drinks at a local bar, and finish the day with incredible harbour and ocean views. That combination is hard to beat.

Follow the coastline. Grab a coffee. Watch the surfers. Find the Wormhole. Stay for sunset. And then decide for yourself whether Manly really does beat Bondi.
