How to spend a perfect day in Antwerp Belgium
Antwerp, Belgium | Europe
Antwerp is one of those cities that feels both grand and cozy at the same time. Even if you only have a single day here, you can still experience its charm, history, food, and shopping culture all in one go. Here’s a fun and realistic itinerary to help you make the most of your time in this beautiful Belgian city.
Start at the Iconic Antwerp Central Station
Arrive early and start your day at Antwerp Central Station. Trust me, this isn’t just a train station, it’s a landmark.
The architecture is absolutely breathtaking. With its huge dome, marble details, and grand halls, it honestly feels more like a palace than a transport hub. Even if you’re not catching a train, it’s worth visiting just to admire the building.

Sweet Stop: Chocolate Nation
Just a short walk from the station, you’ll find Chocolate Nation, the largest Belgian chocolate museum.
This place is super fun (and delicious). You’ll learn about the history of Belgian chocolate and, best of all, you get plenty of tasting along the way. There’s also a shop inside where you can grab sweet souvenirs, perfect if you want to bring something home for family or friends.
Go Shopping in the City Center (Meir & Boutiques)
Next up: shopping!
Antwerp is one of the best shopping cities in Belgium. You’ll find everything from big international brands on Meir Street to small, unique boutiques hidden in side streets.
One of the best parts of Antwerp is discovering those independent stores where you suddenly find something you didn’t know you needed (but absolutely do). It’s the perfect place to slow down, browse, and enjoy the city vibe.

Lunch: Belgian Fries You Have to Try
You can’t visit Belgium without eating fries—and Antwerp does them really well.
Grab a cone of crispy fries from a local frituur (there are many around the city). They’re usually served hot, golden, and with way too many sauce options (which is honestly the best problem to have).
It’s simple, messy, and absolutely delicious. My go to place for Belgium fried is the Fritkot Max, try it out if you want to!
Visit Het Steen (The Castle by the River)
After lunch, make your way to the old riverside fortress, Het Steen.
This medieval castle is one of the oldest buildings in Antwerp and sits right along the Scheldt River. It used to be a defensive stronghold, but today it’s a museum and cultural site. The views around it are lovely, especially for photos. You can go inside the museum, but I just love to have a quick walk around before heading to the grote markt.
Stop at Grote Markt for Drinks or a Waffle
From Het Steen, walk toward the historic city square: Grote Markt.
This is the heart of old Antwerp, surrounded by beautiful guild houses and the impressive city hall. It’s the perfect place to sit down with a Belgian beer or enjoy a warm waffle while people-watching.
If you’re visiting in winter, this area also transforms into a magical Christmas market with lights, food stalls, and festive music.

MAS – Museum aan de Stroom
If you still have the time check out one of the best views in the city: head to MAS (Museum aan de Stroom).
The museum itself is interesting, but the real highlight is the rooftop. You can go up for free and enjoy panoramic views over the city, the harbor, and the river. It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the light hits the water and rooftops.
Dinner at Giovanni
Finish your day with a cozy dinner at Giovanni, one of my personal favorite Italian spots in Antwerp.
The pasta is comforting, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s the perfect way to end a full day of exploring. After walking around all day, sitting down with a good plate of pasta feels like a reward.

Final Thoughts
Even with just one day, Antwerp gives you a little bit of everything, history, architecture, food, shopping, and beautiful views.
What makes the city special is how easy it is to explore on foot. You can go from a grand train station to a medieval castle, then end your day watching the sunset from a rooftop, all in just a few hours.
If you only take one thing from this itinerary, let it be this: don’t rush Antwerp. Slow down, wander a little, and let the city surprise you.
