One Day in Antwerp: The Perfect Antwerp Itinerary

Antwerp is one of those cities that manages to feel both grand and cozy at the same time. If you only have one day in Antwerp, you can still experience its beautiful architecture, rich history, Belgian food, shopping streets, and stunning city views without feeling like you have to rush from place to place.
From arriving at the spectacular Antwerp Central Station to eating Belgian fries and watching the sunset from a rooftop, this one day in Antwerp itinerary covers some of my favorite things to see and do in the city.
Start Your Day at Antwerp Central Station
Start your day at Antwerp Central Station. And trust me, this isn’t just a place to catch your train, it is one of the city’s most impressive landmarks.
The station is famous for its grand architecture, huge dome, marble details, and beautiful main hall. It honestly feels more like a palace than a train station.
Even if you aren’t arriving by train, it’s worth stepping inside to admire the architecture before you start exploring the city.
Sweet Stop: Chocolate Nation
Just a short walk from the station, you’ll find Chocolate Nation, the largest Belgian chocolate museum. If you have a sweet tooth, this is a fun way to start your Antwerp adventure. The museum takes you through the history and culture of Belgian chocolate, with tastings along the way. And, of course, there’s a shop where you can pick up some chocolate souvenirs to take home. Just be warned: you might leave with considerably more chocolate than you planned to buy.
Explore Antwerp’s Shopping Streets
Next up: shopping! Antwerp is one of the best shopping destinations in Belgium, and there’s something for almost every style and budget. Start on Meir, Antwerp’s main shopping street, where you’ll find plenty of international brands.
But don’t stop there. Some of my favorite finds are in the smaller independent boutiques tucked away on the surrounding streets. One of the best things about exploring Antwerp is wandering without a strict plan and seeing what you discover. Take your time, browse the shops, and enjoy the atmosphere of the city center.
Lunch: Try Belgian Fries in Antwerp
You can’t visit Belgium without eating fries, and Antwerp is a great place to try them.
Look for a traditional frituur, where you’ll find a cone of crispy, golden Belgian fries with an almost overwhelming number of sauces to choose from. Honestly, having too many sauce options is a pretty good problem to have.
For a classic Antwerp fry stop, I recommend Fritkot Max. It’s a great place to grab a quick and delicious lunch before continuing your one day in Antwerp itinerary. Messy? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
Visit Het Steen, Antwerp’s Medieval Castle
After lunch, make your way toward the Scheldt River to visit Het Steen, Antwerp’s medieval riverside fortress.
Het Steen is one of the oldest buildings in Antwerp and has played an important role in the city’s history. Today, the castle and surrounding area are a popular place to visit while exploring the historic center. You can go inside and learn more about Antwerp, but I personally love simply walking around the outside and taking in the views of the river. From here, it’s an easy walk toward the next stop: Grote Markt.
Grote Markt: Waffles, Drinks & Historic Architecture
Next, head to Grote Markt, the beautiful historic square in the heart of Antwerp’s old town. The square is surrounded by impressive guild houses and Antwerp’s historic City Hall, making it one of the prettiest places in the city to stop for a drink and take some photos.
This is also the perfect time for a Belgian waffle or a Belgian beer. Grab a seat outside, slow down for a little while, and enjoy watching people pass through the square. Visiting Antwerp in winter? Grote Markt becomes even more magical when the Christmas market arrives, with festive lights, food stalls, and seasonal decorations.
End Your One Day in Antwerp with a View from MAS
If you still have some energy, make your way to MAS (Museum aan de Stroom).
The museum itself is worth visiting if you have more time in Antwerp, but even if you’re only interested in the views, don’t skip the building. You can head up to the rooftop for free and enjoy panoramic views across Antwerp, the harbor, and the Scheldt River.
It’s one of my favorite places to see the city from above. Try to time your visit around sunset if you can. Watching the sun go down over the water and rooftops is a beautiful way to finish your sightseeing.
Dinner: Finish Your Day at Giovanni
After a full day of walking, shopping, sightseeing, and eating, it’s time for dinner.
For a cozy end to your one day in Antwerp, head to Giovanni, one of my personal favorite Italian spots in the city.
The pasta is comforting, the atmosphere is relaxed, and after spending the entire day exploring Antwerp, sitting down with a good plate of pasta feels like the perfect reward.
Final Thoughts
Even with just one day in Antwerp, you can experience a little bit of everything the city has to offer: grand architecture, Belgian chocolate, shopping, historic buildings, fries, waffles, and beautiful views.
What I love most about Antwerp is how easy it is to explore. You can go from one of Europe’s most spectacular train stations to a medieval castle, wander through historic squares, and end your day overlooking the city—all within a relatively small area. If you only take one thing from this one day in Antwerp itinerary, let it be this: don’t try to see absolutely everything.
Leave some room to wander, stop for a waffle, browse a shop you didn’t plan to visit, and simply enjoy the atmosphere. Sometimes the best parts of Antwerp are the things you discover when you’re not rushing to the next stop.
